YouTuber Claims E20 Petrol Reduced Mercedes Mileage to 5 km/l, Mercedes India Rejects Compatibility Concerns

A YouTuber’s claim that E20 petrol reduced his Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC mileage from 16–17 km/l to 5 km/l has sparked debate. Mercedes India says post-2020 petrol models support E20 fuel, while experts highlight expected minor efficiency drops and no widespread engine issues.

A controversy has emerged over E20 petrol after Uttarakhand-based YouTuber Saurav Joshi claimed that the fuel blend caused a sharp decline in the mileage of his Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC, reducing fuel efficiency from 16–17 km/l to nearly 5 km/l. The claim gained wider attention after opposition leader Arvind Kejriwal shared the allegations along with garage footage showing damaged vehicles.

According to Saurav Joshi, his luxury vehicle experienced a significant drop in fuel efficiency after using E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20 percent ethanol. The government introduced nationwide availability of E20 petrol by late 2025 as part of efforts to reduce crude oil imports and support farmers through increased ethanol production from sugarcane.

The claims have triggered discussions over the impact of ethanol-blended fuel on vehicle performance and engine reliability. However, Mercedes India has stated that its petrol models manufactured after 2020 are fully compatible with E20 fuel and do not face such compatibility concerns.

Automotive experts have noted that real-world mileage for vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC generally ranges between 9 and 12 km/l, particularly in hilly regions. Experts have also stated that ethanol contains lower energy content than conventional petrol, which may result in a minor fuel efficiency reduction of around 2 to 6 percent.

Government data and Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) testing have not indicated widespread engine-related problems or a significant increase in warranty claims following the adoption of E20 petrol. However, some owners of vehicles manufactured before 2023 have reported repair-related concerns.

The E20 fuel policy remains a major step in India’s efforts to reduce dependence on imported oil, promote cleaner fuel alternatives, and strengthen energy self-reliance. While isolated user experiences have raised questions, official assessments and industry responses continue to indicate compatibility among newer petrol vehicles.
